VANCOUVER WHALES

Known as killer whales, orcas are actually large dolphins. There are two types in the region: resident orcas, which feed on salmon, and transient orcas, which hunt marine mammals.

Famous for their spectacular breaches and complex songs, humpback whales migrate from the North Pacific to warmer breeding grounds. They can be seen in the summer, feeding near Vancouver.

3. Gray Whales (Eschrichtius robustus)

With one of the longest migrations of any mammal, gray whales pass by Vancouver on their journey from Mexico to the Arctic.

  • Orcas: Year-round, especially from May to October.
  • Humpback Whales: April to November.
  • Gray Whales: March to May and October to November.

To enjoy whale watching sustainably, it is important to:

  1. Choose responsible operators: Ensure they follow regulations and sustainable practices.
  2. Keep a safe distance: To avoid disturbing the whales.
  3. Minimize noise: To prevent auditory disturbances.
  4. Do not feed the animals: To maintain their natural behavior.

Whales in Vancouver are a natural treasure offering a unique experience and promoting marine conservation. By observing them responsibly, we can ensure that future generations also enjoy their majesty.
